The Property

A spacious five bedroom property surrounded by beautiful mountains, is home to Volunteer Ceylon. Each bedroom has an ensure bathroom with hot and cold water. There is a common T.V. room, pantry, dining room, lounge and a large verandah. Facilities include use of a domestic washing machine and there is WI-FI.

The owners have been in the hospitality industry in Sri Lanka for over three decades and have decided to use their skills and resources as a vehicle to try and lift local people out of poverty through education and vocational training. Opening their doors to Volunteers Ceylon, is an effective way of enabling people to genuinely help the disadvantaged, whilst gaining an authentic experience of the country.

Volunteer Tourism with Volunteer Ceylon

Being part of Volunteer Ceylon offers a wealth of experience for those who want to savour the 'local flavor' of the country. Volunteer Ceylon offers low cost food and lodging for volunteers. The minimum stay is 3 months and the cost per week is US$200.00 inclusive of 3 meals per day, based on shared accommodation.

The bedrooms are provided to the volunteer on the basis that they will clean the room and launder their own clothes, (a washing machine is provided). However there are additional facilities, (cost on request) for laundry, ironing, cleaning and there is an option to have the room air conditioned, (at extra cost).

Volunteer Ceylon offers programs designed to encompass the vast variety of skills amongst volunteers. Joining one of the Volunteer Ceylon programs gives the participant access to local people facing genuine difficulties in situations that test the most experienced of volunteers. Volunteers can be assured of participating in programmers that develop problem solving skills and facilitates the most responsible and sustainable solutions for helping pull local people out of hardship and poverty.

The Location

The city of Ratnapura is located in the Hill Country, 130 meters above sea level and has an average temperature of between 22c to 30c throughout the year. Ratnapura is surrounded by the most beautiful verdant mountains and is easily accessible to many famous scenic sites. The Volunteer Ceylon accommodation is minutes away from the main town of Ratnapura.

Among the many fascinating and spectacular places to visit, is the Singharaja forest, one of the most significant and important unspoilt wildernesses in the country, supporting a vast array of flora and fauna. The sacred foot print of Lord Buddha 'Sree Paada' (Adam's Peak) is a short distance from the property and the surrounding countryside boasts the intense green of paddy fields, lush mountains and the manicured hills of tea plantations. Ratnapura is area producing some of the finest tea in the world.

Ratnapura is famous for its gem mining and is the only place in the country where blue sapphires are discovered. Indeed, the most famous and precious sapphires which adorn the British crown and Princess Diana's engagement ring, are both from Ratnapura.

Mrs Weerasinghe is on hand to give all our volunteers a thorough knowledge of the area and all the important sites as well as advising on participating in all the activities in the area.
