The city of Ratnapura is located in the Hill Country, 130 meters above sea level and has an average temperature of between 22c to 30c throughout the year. Ratnapura is surrounded by the most beautiful verdant mountains and is easily accessible to many famous scenic sites. The Volunteer Ceylon accommodation is minutes away from the main town of Ratnapura.
Among the many fascinating and spectacular places to visit, is the Singharaja forest, one of the most significant and important unspoilt wildernesses in the country, supporting a vast array of flora and fauna. The sacred foot print of Lord Buddha 'Sree Paada' (Adam's Peak) is a short distance from the property and the surrounding countryside boasts the intense green of paddy fields, lush mountains and the manicured hills of tea plantations. Ratnapura is area producing some of the finest tea in the world.
Ratnapura is famous for its gem mining and is the only place in the country where blue sapphires are discovered. Indeed, the most famous and precious sapphires which adorn the British crown and Princess Diana's engagement ring, are both from Ratnapura.
